How Ayahuasca Affects Couple Dynamics and Intimacy in Relationships
“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” – Carl Jung
When we embark on a healing and awakening journey, we start with getting to know ourselves better, and eventually, the dynamics of our relationships with others naturally start to change too. Psychedelics, whether approached with spiritual or therapeutic intentions, have the potential of helping us in this journey of self-inquiry and helping us to have more satisfying relationships. They have the power to connect us to our deeper sense of self, release emotional blockages and shift perspectives, which directly or indirectly open new pathways of communication and intimacy between couples too, opening them to new relationship possibilities. Above all, the plant medicine from the Amazonian jungle, Ayahuasca, has one more healing potential: to connect one to their inner feminine nature, which helps someone to nurture their relationships and create new ones .
Even though Ayahuasca experiences can be deeply transformative, the effects and the integration periods are very personal and they can be multifaceted and sometimes even challenging, especially if one partner did not participate in the experience. With that said, having an experience as a couple might not have the same effects on both parties either. Ayahuasca can bring up unresolved issues, increase vulnerability, and create emotional imbalances. When couples are aligned in their intentions and prepared for the journey, Ayahuasca may offer a transformative opportunity for growth and connection. However, it’s important to approach it with respect, preparation, and a commitment to supporting each other through the experience.
The Sense of Self
The main reason behind why or how Ayahusca can help couples is, first of all, because it has the potential of increasing their self-awareness and helps them to do self-inquiry. Once we become more aware of and get in touch with our sense of self and start to learn more about who we really are, our connections and relationships with others, especially with partners, can start to change. Ayahuasca can put a mirror in front of us for deep self-reflection. During the ceremony, one can get profound emotional insights, reach and process core feelings and access parts of the subconscious mind. Ayahuasca can also shine a light on the root causes of emotional patterns. In the rhythm of our daily lives, it is mostly not possible to slow down and have time to understand the reasons or motivations behind our reactions. Rather than responding and reflecting, we mostly react to the situations that trigger us. With the help of Ayahuasca, someone can start to trace these patterns back and get a better understanding of who they really are.
Empathy and Removing Blocks in Intimacy
Empathy is the core of a relationship. It is the foundation of healthy emotional connection, intimacy and sense of unity. We feel heard, supported and valued when we have it in the relationship. And Ayahuasca expands our emotional awareness, which helps us to be more sensitive to all the feelings around us, whether directly expressed by others or not. This expanded awareness opens the door for compassion and understanding, and a deeper level of connection.
Lack of empathy might cause emotional blockages which one of the partners might have been carrying them with them for years, and they can block the ways for intimacy. Without healing our past relationship scars, it is almost impossible to have healthy connections in a new relationship. To ‘move on’, we need to befriend our past experiences. The experience with Ayahuasca can help us to clean old wounds, break down the barriers and allow us to listen and respond with compassion.
When Ayahuasca opens the space for the partners to be more aligned with each other’s emotional needs, in this safe space, couples can explore and create new layers of intimacy. This can help couples rediscover their physical attraction to each other and reignite their passion. Many participants report feeling more in tune with their body and sensations after their medicine experience. In the same context, Ayahuasca may help release negative beliefs surrounding sexuality, potentially creating a healthier and more liberated approach to sexual connection.
Reconnecting to the Feminine and Nature
Ayahuasca is regarded as a “grandmother plant” because of its guiding feminine energy. Drinking this ancient medicine can bring someone back to a deeper connection with their feminine essence, whether they identify themselves as woman or man; the essence that is often clouded by external expectations and societal roles. This is what happened to me in my first Ayahuasca experience too. I felt a deep connection to all my feminine ancestors and the femininity within me, ehich something I barely had before.
This deep connection to the feminine energy can increase intuition, inner wisdom, sensitivity, softness, and creativity. And there are many ways to honor this. In a relationship, reconnecting with the feminine can shift how someone shows up in their partnership as that connection may help them to tap into a sense of softness and receptivity. This new way of connection might help them to communicate their emotions better, feel more empowered and vulnerable. This can have a transformative effect on couple dynamics, especially in terms of how intimacy is expressed or shared.
Another profound connection that someone can experience during an Ayahuasca ceremony is connection to, and care for nature. When one person in a relationship has this awakening to the natural world, it can affect the entire dynamics. Feeling more connected to nature often results in a deeper understanding of one’s own role in the world, and this awareness can invite greater compassion and tenderness in the relationship too.
Shifting Perspectives on Love, Expectations, and Attachment
Ayahuasca often offers a unique lens through which we can view relationships – free from the filters of conditioning. Ayahuasca can challenge and bring into sharp focus the long-held beliefs about love, security, dependency and attachment, and offer an opportunity to release old patterns and understand their root causes. This shift in perspective can lead to a more liberated and less codependent dynamic in a relationship. With the clarity that comes from the medicine experience, both partners may come to see each other as equals, who can give and receive love freely, without the need for constant validation or fear of abandonment.
When only one partner drinks Ayahuasca…
What happens when only one of the partners returns from the ceremony more in tune with themselves and their feelings?
Apart from all the positive effects that we have explored, this might impact the relationship and intimacy in challenging ways. The one who had the experience may struggle to explain the depth of their experience or the insights they gained, while the non-participant may dismiss them or feel disconnected from their partner’s new perspective. This might lead to feelings of alienation, or they could even see this change as a “threat” to the relationship.
The other scenario is, when one partner becomes more vulnerable, introspective, or emotionally expressive with the effects of the medicine, it could lead to imbalances and distances in the relationship as the partner who did not participate in the ceremony may feel unable to match this level of emotional openness. The participant may have new expectations of themselves or their partner and the non-participant might not be ready to meet these expectations, leading to frustration on both sides.
Jenny, who attended an Ayahuasca ceremony, explained that she and her ex-partner broke up after her last ceremony because her partner said that she came back a different person and he did not understand why. He said she became “too emotional” and needed attention. Even though she explained that it was probably the effects of the medicine, he did not believe her. After that, Jenny realized that she wanted more from a partner and broke up with him.
Ella’s case was also similar. She says that after her Ayahuasca retreat, she felt so open in her body and in the relationship, but her partner was not ready for that. And that’s when things started to change and after a year, they ended up the relationship.
Integration as the Conclusion
It goes without saying that the medicine has different effects on each of us and our past relationship experiences are as unique as we are. More than anything, Ayahuasca teaches us how to connect with our deeper parts, increase our capacity for empathy and compassion, intimacy; so that we can live every part of our lives fully and authentically, including our romantic relationships.
Making personal sense of the teachings of the medicine and integrating them into daily life is as important as having the experience itself. Even though Ayahuasca experiences have the potential to deepen emotional connection and communication between couples, they can also be intense or unpredictable, and not every couple might be ready to explore them.
The key in a nourishing relationship is finding ways to respect each other’s journeys while supporting each other’s growth. It’s important for couples to communicate openly about their experiences, feelings, and expectations before and after an Ayahuasca journey. Understanding that the healing and transformation is personal and might not be fully understood by the other person can help create a safe space with empathy and patience. It’s also helpful to engage in this powerful plant medicine in a safe and supportive environment with guidance from experienced facilitators, with preparation and to be open to getting help if needed, from integration professionals.
